![]() Shakespeare’s intention is unlike that of a traditional sonnet which would only say pleasing things about the person of interest. For instance Shakespeare portrays this idea when he says his “…mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”. His intention is to ridicule other poems that idolize women and lovers. ![]() ![]() Shakespeare, the famous English playwright, poet and actor uses wit, humor and satire in an entertaining and interesting way. Love is ironically portrayed in the poem Sonnet 130 written by William Shakespeare. I admire how both poems explore the themes with an element of wit and humour. Sarcastic and dark undertones are used to reinforce the idea that a lover or friend does not ‘have’ to be perfect. They also share the importance of accepting and loving someone for who they are while having realistic expectations of them. The poems “You’re Beautiful” by Simon Armitage and “Sonnet 130” by William Shakespeare share a mesmerizing theme of love. It would be more peaceful if we could all learn to have realistic expectations of the people around us without putting conditions on our giving love and acceptance. Sometimes I imagine what a beautiful place the world would be if we could accept people as individuals regardless of race, religion and social status. I think it’s really important to appreciate the little things about people and to have unconditional love for them to sustain a long-term relationship. As teens we struggle to accept and appreciate the imperfections and the uniqueness that make people who they are. We expect our partners to be impossibly perfect in terms of appearance and personality. We think we have to change ourselves to be as flawless as people in the media, such as Kim Kardashian, with makeup and plastic surgery.Īs young people, we think we have to change to deserve love. My generation obtains these values from the media’s representation of models and celebrities. We think mostly about other people’s flaws and weaknesses rather than look for the positives about them. We get caught up in our self and what others can do for us. The importance of accepting people for who they are is often forgotten in today’s society. “You’re Beautiful” by Simon Armitage and “Sonnet 130” by William Shakespeare.
